Cause for Concern: Violence in Jamaica

The alarming escalation of violence and murder in Jamaica in 2005 is a serious cause for concern for both residents and visitors. Close to 1,400 murders have occured in this country of 2.7 million residents this year, and tourism officials are concerned that this glut of violence will keep many vacationers from visiting the island. United States officials warn travelers to stay away from urban areas in Kingston and to take common sense precautions when in tourist areas. The Jamaican government is actively working on solutions and security measures to curb the current pandemic of violence.
